Crabs cooked in tamarind and coconut milk


  • 8 medium sized crabs
  • 1 and 1/2 cups onion paste
  • 2 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 3 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • Salt to taste
  • 4-5 tbsp oil


  • Clean and wash the crabs well. You can cut them into two halves if they are big or leave them as they are. Crack the claws slightly
  • Heat the oil and add the onion paste
  • Cook the onions till they are nicely browned, on a slow flame
  • Add the ginger garlic paste and saute well
  • Add the turmeric, chilli and coriander powders, garam masala and salt and saute
  • Add the crabs to this masala and toss them well
  • Add a little water and cook them covered for about 10 minutes.
  • Add the tamarind paste and let it simmer for a couple of minutes
  • Add the coconut milk and simmer till the gravy thickens and coats the crab
